One of my favorite things about vanlife is that it is made up of so many different aspects. There’s building. There’s design. There’s decorating. There’s gadgets. There’s travel. There’s cooking There’s adventure. There’s camping. All of those things are a part of vanlife.
When you run a vanlife-centric YouTube channel like mine, you have the option to focus on any of those things. I’ve seen channels that feature long cooking segments in every video. I’ve seen channels that focus primarily on the camping aspect. What I find the most fun is to dabble in everything. I’ve built things in videos, I’ve installed things in videos, and I’ve camped in videos. Doing the same thing over and over bores me.
I tell this to anyone who’ll listen: if you ever get the opposrunity, marry your best friend. I did. If it looks like we’re having a blast being together, it’s because we are. As our friends and family can attest, my wife and I have fun together every day. Nobody makes me laugh harder than she does. All the jokes, all the laughs, and all the fun we have on camera is just a small window into what our lives are like. Sorry if that sounds mushy.

I am good at having fun and good and good at editing video but not always good at capturing all the footage I should. In the past there have been times where I’ve had to double back and pick up shots to piece together the narrative I wanted to tell. When your entire video consists of footage recorded away from home on a road trip, that’s not possible. You got what you got, so to speak. There were so many interesting people and things in that game store and all the footage I ended up shooting made it look like a quiet library. When editing together the footage of Atomic Candy, most of the footage consisted of wide, sweeping shots with few details of the different candy available in the store. I’ve read you should shoot twice as much footage as you think you need and for me, I should try shooting three times as much. There’s no such thing as having too many clips to work with, in my opinion.
I hope all the fun we had comes through. I like building things for my van and reviewing things for my van and repairing things on my van, but most of all I like having fun in the van — and sharing that fun with you.
