Terunsoul’s new D018 Dashcam has everything I ever wanted in a dashcam. Not only does it have all the standard features that I expect from a dashcam, but it also comes with not two but three cameras: one forward, one backward, and one for the cab. I’m a happy boy.

The Terunsoul D018 comes packed nicely in a box that contains everything you need to install the camera and get it up and running. The windshield camera (which contains both the forward and cab-facing cameras) comes with a 12v-to-USB-C cable for power, although I was able to run the unit from a USB port I already had in my dash. The rear-facing camera connects via a long USB-C cable. The front camera is held on with a suction cup, which I like better than having a semi-permanent mount stuck to my windshield as I occasionally move these things between vehicles. You also get a trim kit tool to help hide wires, a thick and detailed manual, and lots of other goodies like alcohol wipes to clean your windows, stickers to let people know you have a dashcam installed, and visual guides to help you place the cameras. Terunsoul didn’t forget anything.

The D018 has five physical buttons on the bottom of the main unit that allow you to navigate menus and change settings, but only if you have good vision. I prefer changing all these settings through the free phone app, but I have to say I encountered a few issues while using the app. The app requires an account, and creating an account requires their system to email you a pin number… which for me, never came. I retried the next day and everything worked fine, although now I am unable to log back in. Fortunately there’s a “skip” button that sllows you to bypass all of this.

The built-in GPS does a good job of tracking your journey. Everything from the direction you’re driving to the date, time, speed, and even your GPS coordinates are recorded and, by default, appear in downloaded footage. The app allows you to retrace your trips via Google Maps. This is great for personal logging, but if you’re sharing the videos online you may want to remove your GPS coordinates from the clips.

All the standard features are here. There’s looping mode, which records over old footage when the included 128GB card fills up, and parking mode, if the device has constant power. You can also adjust the quality of the recorded footage down from 4k to 2k, which still looks great and will essentially double the amount of clips you can store on the SD card.

Downloading clips to your computer is a little kludgy, although I suspect half the problem lies in Apple’s security restraints. To download a video clip through the app you must first connect to the dashcam over WiFi, transfer the file from the dashcam to the app, transfer the file from the app to your camera roll, and then transfer the file from your camera roll to your computer. Until you clean things up, that leaves four copies of each file in different locations. To make my YouTube video I drove around in the van for about half an hour, came home, and then had to transfer 90 one-minute (the default recording length) files from the unit to my camera, which took 5-10 minutes as I sat in the driveway so my phone would remain connected to the dashcam. The other steps (moving the files from the app to my camera roll and from there to my computer) could be done inside. If you do plan on downloading or archiving your footage, save yourself the headache and just yank the micro-SD card out and insert it directly into your computer.

I thought the Terunsoul D018 provided great video quality during the day and okay video quality at night. In daytime footage you would have no problem reading a license plate or identifying a person’s face. At night, especially if there are street lights around, the quality isn’t as good.

All that being said, I think the Terunsoul D018 is one of the best dashcams available in this price range. The ability to record three video streams at once, two in 4k and one in 1080p, is outstanding. Once you get past any setup hurdles with the app, it’s all smooth sailing from there.
