Last weekend, my wife “kidnapped” me and drove me (in my own van!) to Red Rock Canyon in Hinton, Oklahoma.
Red Rock Canyon is approximately one hour west of Oklahoma City, and less than five minutes south of I-40 if you happen to be driving through. When I was a kid, it was known as Red Rock Canyon or Red Rock State Park. About five years ago due to budget cuts, the park was leased to the city of Hinton, Oklahoma and rebranded Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park. Along with the new name came came two other changes — the addition of rentable campsites (everything from 30′ campers to yurts), and the addition of an entrance fee. It now costs $10 to enter the park, with campsites available from $25 (no amenities) to $40 (RV campsites with water and electricity).
I knew it was going to be cold when we left and Big Rob’s Van was up to the challenge. On my bed I have a comforter, a flannel blanket, an electric blanket, and a zero degree sleeping bag. If none of those were enough to keep me warm, I also have my Mr. Buddy heater in the van. That being said, Big Rob’s Van is designed to comfortable sleep one — me. On the rare occasion that my wife goes with me on a camping adventure, she brings a tent (which she prefers), but the sun never came out and instead of spending a miserably cold night in a tent for no real reason, we decided to circle the wagons and head back to the house. When it warms up a bit, we’ll definitely go back.
I am still struggling as to what people “do” while camping. I get it, people hike and cook and read I guess, but at home there is never a minute where I’m not on the computer or watching TV or writing or playing a game or, quite regularly, doing at least two of those things at the same time. I’m not wired to sit and stare at rocks for hours. I have to find something interesting to do there when we go back. And no, rappelling ain’t it.
